SPI Laguna Madre Nature Trail Boardwalk on Texas’ Top 10 List; Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge Wetlands Boardwalk Receives an Honorable Mention

South Padre Island’s Laguna Madre Nature Trail was named in the Top 10 List for Boardwalks by Texas Parks & Wildlife, The Outdoor Magazine of Texas.

The nature trail’s boardwalk is located adjacent to the South Padre Island Convention Centre at 7355 Padre Blvd.

The article lists the boardwalk’s features as being 1,500 feet long while cutting through tall marsh grass and linking four acres of wetlands to the Laguna Madre shore. There are two observation blinds where tourists may watch various Island animal life -- from birds to turtles to even an alligator.

Birders come from all over the world to visit the Island and its well-known nature trail to catch a glimpse of various rare-bird species.

The Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge wetlands boardwalk also received an honorable mention.

Also on the top 10 list were: Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, Paradise Pond, Wetland Park, Port Aransas; Big Thicket National Preserve; Galveston Island State Park, Galveston; Formosa Wetlands Walkway, Lighthouse Beach and Bird Sanctuary, Port Lavaca; Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Anahuac; Armand Bayou Nature Center, Houston; Cibolo Nature Center, Boerne; Rio Grande Village Nature Trail, Big Bend National Park; and the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge, Fort Worth.

Also receiving an honorable mention were: Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Austwell; Brazos Bend State Park, Needville; Hans A. Suter Wildlife Park, Corpus Christi; Sabal Palm Audobon Center and Sanctuary, Brownsville; San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge, Brazoria; Sheldon Lake State Park, Houston; Tony Houseman Wildlife Management Area, Port Arthur; and Double Lake Recreation Area, Sam Houston National Forest, Coldspring.
