Isla Blanca Park deal came in under the radar

March 5, 2006 — I am challenging the Cameron County Commissioners Court, County Judge Gilberto Hinojosa, and Cameron County Parks Director Javier Mendez to step up and deal straight with the residents of Cameron County who care about our county parks, just like South Padre Island developer Doyle Wells did at last Wednesday’s regular meeting of the South Padre Island Board of Aldermen.

“You’re damn right I’m in this to make a buck,” Wells at one point told a disapproving crowd. Wells is a friendly family acquaintance, and I don’t find fault in his intentions, because at least he came out and said what’s in it for him. I fault the county trustees who brought the deal to, in effect, sell Isla Blanca Park to private developers this far without inviting any public interaction.
